Title: Website Production & Editorial Associate
Supervisor: National Director, State Environmental
Resource Center (SERC)
About SERC: The State Environmental Resource Center (SERC)
is a joint project of Defenders of Wildlife and Natural Resource Defense
Council that researches and monitors state environmental legislation and
prepares sample bills and supporting materials to aid state governors,
legislators, and citizen groups.
SERC is currently seeking a Website Production & Editorial Associate
with a strong interest in the environment. This position will assist
our staff with various website, information technology, and writing priorities.
The job is located in downtown Madison, Wisconsin.
Job Summary: The Website Production & Editorial Associate
has the lead responsibility for ensuring the efficient functioning of the
most comprehensive state environmental policy website in the country.
SERC regularly uses information technologies to function as a liaison to
state legislators, environmental organizations, and the general public.
The priorities of the Website Production & Editorial Associate are
determined and assigned by the National Director.
Duties: This professional-level position is responsible
for information technology and content generation operations, including:
1) Webpage Production and Maintenance: Produce
webpages in accordance with SERC style guidelines and templates; Create
images and icons using Adobe Photoshop; Post pages to and maintain SERC's
website using online administrative tools; Review websites regularly to
assure that pages are current and accurate; Update existing webpages as
prompted by new developments.
2) IT Support: Work cooperatively with other members of offsite
IT staff, outside consultants and SERC staff to maintain IT operations
as well as conceive, research and coordinate new website features.
3) Writing and Editing: Prepare webpage copy; copy edit and
proofread others' work; Assist in the writing, editing, and production
of editions of Wildlines, SERC’s weekly newsletter; Maintain news ticker;
Research and write text for additional links to other websites and correspond
with those sites to seek reciprocal links; Write navigational website copy
as well as webpage overviews and introductions; automate and maintain mailing
lists; create new functions and features on the SERC website.
4) Administering Contact Databases: Maintain production guidelines
and departmental electronic archives; Administer contact databases.
5) Research: Assist with tracking specific environmental issues
and preparing comprehensive background documents as assigned by the Director;
perform internet and library searches and conduct telephone interviews.
6) Be an energetic, enthusiastic and committed advocate for SERC.
Perform other project tasks as assigned by the Director.
Qualifications: The Website Production & Editorial
Associate should have a college degree, and must have:
1) Strong writing, editing and verbal communication skills;
Strong html hand coding skills and experience, and be proficient in creating
web images.
2) A strong level of general computer skills and expertise in Word,
Excel, and Access, is required.
3) Familiarity with Javascript and advanced webpage programming is
a plus, as is skill using Photoshop, FrontPage, and other graphics and
web programming applications.
4) Superior writing ability, commitment to accuracy and the ability
to work collaboratively are all essential.
5) A commitment to the protection of the environment.
6) Ability to prioritize and complete many assignments in a deadline-oriented
environment, be detail-oriented, but be able to maintain proper focus on
big picture and long-range goals.
