SERC currently has three bills available to reduce mercury in the environment:
- Omnibus Mercury Reduction
Act - This bill is based on model legislation drafted by the Mercury
Policy Project – one of the nation’s leading mercury abatement
advocacy groups. It is a comprehensive bill that reduces mercury use
and exposure through implementation of several innovative strategies,
including labeling products containing mercury, phasing out thermometers
and other mercury products, and mercury reduction requirements for large
mercury emitters.
- Mercury Thermometer Reduction
Act - This bill is based on recently passed Minnesota legislation
that bans the sale of mercury thermometers.
- Battery Return / Deposit
Recycling Act - Batteries are an important source of mercury that
recirculates in the environment. This bill is modeled after a conventional
deposit / return systems that works well for other disposable products.
The Mercury Policy Project also has model Dental
Mercury Legislation, which requires dentists to educate their patients
about the use of mercury fillings and to responsibly manage the mercury
they use.
